ANNAPOLIS (AP) — Gov. Martin O’Malley’s administration is holding ongoing talks with labor leaders for state employees over how to handle furlough days to address a budget shortfall.

O’Malley says it’s more a matter of when and for how long the furloughs will last. They are needed to help make up for a $200 million drop off in state revenues.

O’Malley says furloughs could save about $40 million of that. The rest of the money will be made up in budget cuts by the Board of Public Works, either this month or next month.

The governor says the number of furlough days could vary for certain state employees, depending on how much money they make.

Maryland already has reduced spending by roughly $2.2 billion since O’Malley took office in January 2007, making budget cuts harder to do.
